Born Alexandre Silva de Assis on December 25, 1969, in Rio de Janeiro, Xande de Pilares built his name in samba and pagode before stepping out as a major solo voice. He came up in Rioâs suburban samba circuit and spent more than two decades as a lead singer and key figure in Grupo Revelação (1991â2014), helping define the groupâs radio-friendly pagode era with songs that later became staples at rodas de samba. After leaving the band, Xande de Pilares focused on a solo run that leaned into both classic samba phrasing and contemporary pagode production, releasing albums such as Samba de Roda (2014), Esse Menino Sou Eu (2016), and O Mundo é Nosso (2022), while remaining a sought-after live performer. In 2023, he pivoted into a repertoire-driven project with Xande Canta Caetano, reinterpreting Caetano Velosoâs catalog through samba and pagode arrangements; the album went on to win the 2024 Latin Grammy for Best Samba/Pagode Album. He followed that momentum with the live series Nos Braços do Povo, Vol. 1 (Ao Vivo) (2025) and Nos Braços do Povo, Vol. 2 (Ao Vivo) (2026), reinforcing his reputation as a bandleader who could turn big chorusesâlike âAinda Bemââinto crowd-sing moments.
