Smoke or Fire, an American punk rock band from Boston, Massachusetts, formed in 1998 when Joe McMahon, Chris Brand, Bill Ironfield, and Nick Maggiore came together while attending Boston University. Initially known as Jericho, the band released their debut album, When the Battery Dies, in 2000. After relocating to Richmond, Virginia, and changing their name to Jericho RVA due to a naming conflict, they gained attention with the EP Worker's Union. In 2004, they changed their name again to Smoke or Fire and signed with Fat Wreck Chords, and released their debut full-length album, Above the City, in 2005. The band released subsequent albums, including This Sinking Ship (2007) and The Speakeasy (2010). In 2022, the compilation album Beauty Fades, featuring unreleased tracks and B-sides, was released by Iodine Recordings.
