Biography
Rancid is an American punk rock band that formed in 1991 in Berkeley, California. The band was initially formed by Tim Armstrong (vocals, guitar) and Matt Freeman (bass, vocals), both of whom were previously members of the influential ska punk band Operation Ivy who created a sound characterized by fast, energetic punk rock with influences from ska, reggae, and other genres and known for its catchy melodies, aggressive punk attitude, and socially conscious lyrics. After recruiting drummer Brett Reed, the band released their debut EP, Rancid, in 1992 on Lookout! Records. The EP gained local and national attention, leading the band to sign with Epitaph Records with their self-titled debut album released the following year. With Armstrong's raspy vocals, Freeman's fast-paced basslines, Brett Reed's tight and energetic rhythm section plus newcomer Lars Frederiksen's aggressive power chords, Rancid released their 1995 breakthrough album, ...And Out Come the Wolves to critical acclaim. The album featured hit singles like "Time Bomb" and "Ruby Soho," which received significant airplay on radio and MTV, solidifying Rancid's place in the punk rock scene and became one of their most successful albums, reaching the Top 50 on the Billboard 200 chart. Over the next 28 years, Rancid continued to release albums that further cemented their reputation as one of the leading bands in punk rock, most notably: Life Won't Wait (1998), Rancid 2000 (2000), Indestructible (2003), Let the Dominoes Fall (2009), â¦Honor Is All We Know (2014) and Trouble Maker (2017). The band returned in 2023 with their first album in six years, Tomorrow Never Comes, produced by Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz, charting highly in several countries including Australia and the UK, and peaking number 5 on the Japanese Oricon Rock Albums chart.
