Biography

Los Pleneros de la Cresta is a Puerto Rican plena ensemble formed in 2013 at the University of Puerto Rico’s Río Piedras campus, featuring Joseph Ocasio Rivera, Joshuan Ocasio Rivera, Jeyluix Ocasio Rivera, and Josué Román Figueroa. With “La Cresta” nodding to the university’s rooster symbol, the group built its identity around panderetas-driven plena, call-and-response choruses, and lyrics that engage everyday life and social issues. Their recorded catalog began with Mucho Gusto, Soy de la Isla (2015), followed by Puerto Rico Vive (2021), which kept the traditional plena core while widening the band’s arrangements and repertoire. In 2024 they released Sentimiento y Cultura and the topical single “Las Playas son del Pueblo,” and in 2025 they reached a broader audience through work with Bad Bunny on “Café con Ron” and “Baile Inolvidable,” while continuing to release their own material, including “El Fuego de Borinquen” (2025).
