La Sonora Matancera, a Cuban musical group, was founded on January 12, 1924 in Barrio Ojo de Agua, Matanzas. Initially named Tuna Liberal, the ensemble included ValentÃn Cané and Pablo "Bubú" Vázquez GobÃn as co-founders. In 1928, they made their first recordings for RCA-Victor and began performing on Radio Progreso. By the 1930s, La Sonora Matancera had evolved into a conjunto, adding a piano to its instrumentation. Notable members included Rogelio MartÃnez, who joined in 1926 and became co-director in 1932. The group's name was formalized as Conjunto Sonora Matancera that same year. Throughout their career, La Sonora Matancera collaborated with prominent singers such as Bienvenido Granda, Daniel Santos, Myrta Silva, and Celia Cruz. They released numerous albums, including Baile Con la Sonora Matancera (1956) and En México (1960). The group's influence extended beyond Cuba, with performances in Mexico and Puerto Rico. La Sonora Matancera continued to release music into the 21st century, with posthumous releases such as "Zenide Y La Matancera Sound" (2001) and "Navidades Con La Sonora" (2005). The group disbanded in 2001 following the death of Rogelio MartÃnez on May 13.
