Tomte was formed in Hamburg, Germany, by guitarist and vocalist Thees Uhlmann, bassist Christian Stemmann, and drummer Timo Bodenstein in 1987; the trio later added guitarist Olli Koch and drummer Max Schröder, while the bandâs lineup evolved over the years. Their first single, "Blinkmuffel", was issued in 1996 as a 7â³ and marked the beginning of their public output, followed by the 1998 debut album Du WeiÃt, Was Ich Meine, produced with Kettcarâs Marcus Wiebusch and initiating a touring schedule that expanded their regional following. In 2000, the band released Eine Sonnige Nacht and founded the independent label Hotel van Cleef, which later merged into Grand Hotel van Cleef; the 2003 release Hinter All Diesen Fenstern entered the German charts at number 50 and earned the number 1 spot in Spexâs reader poll. Subsequent albums Buchstaben Ãber Der Stadt (2006) and Heureka (2008) achieved chart positions of 4 and 10 respectively, and singles such as "Ich Sang Die Ganze Zeit Von Dir" reached number 38 on the German singles chart. The band supported international tours, including a 2009 US run with The Weakerthans, and released the limited 7â³ Live From The Eastcoast in December 2009. After an indefinite hiatus announced in 2010, Thees Uhlmann pursued solo projects, while Tomteâs legacy remains documented through their catalog and continued influence on the German indie-rock scene.
