Biography
The Bavarian indie rock band Sportfreunde Stiller was founded in Germering in 1995 and currently consists of singer and guitarist Peter Brugger, drummer Florian âFloâ Weber, and bassist and keyboardist Rüdiger âRüdeâ Linhof. After releasing two EPs, they released their debut album, So wie einst Real Madrid, in 2000. They achieved their breakthrough in 2002 with the single âEin Kompliment, â which spent 64 weeks on the German charts. Their next three albumsâ Die gute Seite (2002), Burli (2004), and You Have to Win Zweikampf (2006)âall reached the Top 10 in Germany and Austria and earned several gold records. During the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, the soccer song ââ54, â74, â90, 2006â stormed to the top of the singles charts. With their follow-up album La Bum (2007), they reached No. 1 in Germany for the first time. Their *MTV Unplugged in New York* ( 2009) album was also a chart-topper and was even certified double platinum. With their covers of Udo Jürgensâ âIch war noch niemals in New Yorkâ and âLass mich nie mehr los,â two singles from the Unplugged album enjoyed chart success. Driven by the hit single âApplaus Applaus,â Sportfreunde Stiller reached the top of the Austrian album charts for the first time with *New York, Rio, Rosenheim *. In 2016, they reached No. 1 in Germany for the third time with their seventh album Sturm & Stille, placing No. 2 in Austria and No. 10 in Switzerland. Their most successful single was âDas Geschenk.â In the years that followed, things went quiet around the band, and the three members devoted themselves to other projects. Starting in September 2021, much to the delight of their fans, they began posting regularly on their social media channels again and, after a hiatus of several years, were seen back in the rehearsal room and the studio. This led to the release of the album Jeder nur ein X in 2022, following a six-year hiatus. The album reached number 7 on the German album charts. In 2026, another studio album, Happy Birthday!, followed. The album climbed to number 6 in Germany.
