Biography
The Temper Trap formed in Melbourne in 2005 around singer and guitarist Dougy Mandagi, bassist Jonathon Aherne, guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto, and drummer Toby Dundas, with Joseph Greer later joining on keyboards and guitar. Blending indie rock, atmospheric guitars, and Mandagiâs high, soaring vocals, the group introduced itself with a self-titled EP in 2006 before moving toward an international audience through festival and showcase appearances. Their debut album, Conditions, arrived in 2009, produced by Jim Abbiss, and turned them into one of Australiaâs major rock exports. Its breakthrough single, âSweet Disposition,â became a defining anthem of the late 2000s, reached the UK Top Ten, appeared prominently in (500) Days of Summer, and helped the band win ARIA Awards in 2010 for Best Group and Most Popular Australian Single. After relocating to London, The Temper Trap toured heavily across Europe, Australia, and North America, then returned in 2012 with the Tony Hoffer-produced The Temper Trap. Featuring âNeed Your Love,â âTrembling Hands,â and âMiracle,â the album reached number one in Australia and won ARIA Awards for Best Group and Best Rock Album. Sillitto left in 2013, and the remaining members continued as a four-piece for Thick as Thieves, released in 2016 with singles including âThick as Thieves,â âFall Together,â âAlive,â and âLost.â After touring the album, the group stepped back in 2018, returning only briefly for anniversary activity around Conditions. In 2023, they recorded a version of The Churchâs âUnder the Milky Wayâ for Mushroomâs 50th-anniversary project. A fuller comeback began in 2025 with âLucky Dimesâ and âGiving Up Air,â followed in 2026 by âInto the Wildâ and âSungazer.â Their fourth album, Sungazer, was released on July 10, 2026, through Mushroom Music and Virgin Music Group.
