Biography

British India was formed in 2003 in Melbourne by lead vocalist Declan Melia, guitarist Nic Wilson, bassist Will Drummond and drummer Matt O'Gorman, who met at St. Bede's College. Their first single, "Outside 109" (2005), received Triple J airplay and sparked industry interest. The group issued the EP Counter Culture (2005) and their debut album Guillotine (30 June 2007); tracks "Black & White Radio" and "Run the Red Light" entered the Triple J Hottest 100, and the album earned a 2007 J Award nomination and an AIR Award for Best New Artist. Thieves (19 July 2008) peaked at number 5 on the ARIA Albums Chart, while Avalanche (30 April 2010) debuted in the top ten and sold 20,000 copies. After independent releases, the band signed with Liberation Music and released Controller (22 March 2013), featuring the platinum‑certified single "I Can Make You Love Me"; the album included a tour supporting The Rolling Stones. Nothing Touches Me (13 March 2015) entered the Australian charts at number 5 and led to a headline spot at Byron Bay Bluesfest. In 2017 they issued Forgetting the Future (22 September 2017) with producer Oscar Dawson; the single "Precious" promoted the album. Following Nic Wilson’s departure, Jack Tosi joined in 2019, and the band continued touring Australia, sustaining a steady presence in the indie rock scene.
