Biography

Mixing flamboyant synth pop melodies with the driving, punk force of a great garage band, Phoenix reinvented indie rock with their French romanticism and stylish swagger. Formed when Laurent Brancowitz left an early formation of electro stars Daft Punk and teamed up with his brother Chris Mazzalai's band, the four-piece grew out of the Paris suburbs and first came to wider attention when they became the backing band for label mates Air. Early albums 'Alphabetical' (2004) and 'It's Never Been Like That' (2006) stood out in their homeland, which was more used to dance and ambient music, and front man Thomas Mars' relationship with director Sophia Coppola led to their track 'Too Young' being used in her hit film 'Lost in Translation'. Their big commercial breakthrough came when their fourth album 'Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix' made the top 40 in the US and won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album and the album's singles 'Lisztomania' and '1901' became underground anthems. The 2013 follow-up 'Bankrupt!' continued their rise, reaching number four in the US and they went on to headline several 2013 festivals including Coachella Valley, Primavera Sound and Lollapalooza. On the day of the release of 'Bankrupt!' Phoenix were in London, England and performed a one-off show at Shepherd's Bush Empire. They returned to the US where they continued to promote their album with tours and television appearances before getting back in the studio to record 'Ti Amo' which would be released in 2017.
