Biography
Originally known as Fear of Flying, the British trio â Harry McVeigh (vocals/guitar), Charles Cave (bass), and Jack Lawrence-Brown (drums) â released a few singles in 2006 before reinventing themselves as White Lies in 2007 and achieving international success. The groupâs early sound was lovable Britpop, but they adopted a more atmospheric, gloomy sound as White Lies. Lyrical themes such as death, loss and electro-shock therapy instantly gave their new songs a spiraling, morbid eeriness and they were soon being hailed as future stars by the NME, XFM and in the BBC Sound of 2009. The gothic grandeur of singles âTo Lose My Lifeâ and âFarewell to the Fairgroundâ set the tone as support slots with Glasvegas and appearances at Reading and Leeds, Oxygen and T in the Park festivals built their profile. The band's growing reputation as one of Britain's hottest new bands was confirmed when debut album To Lose My Life... shot straight to Number 1 in the UK Albums Chart in January 2009. They followed its success with Ritual (2011), Big TV (2013), Friends (2016), and Five (2019), Preceded by the singles âAs I Try Not to Fall Apart,â âI Donât Wantâ to Go to Mars,â âAm I Really Going to Die,â and âBlue Drift,â White Lies returned in 2022 with their sixth album. As I Try Not to Fall Apart. Three years later, the band followed up with Night Light, released in November 2025.
