Biography

Lucy Railton is a British cellist, composer, and curator renowned for her innovative approach to contemporary music. Her work seamlessly blends classical training with experimental practices, exploring the physicality of sound, resonance, and the boundaries between acoustic and electronic music. Born in London, she studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the New England Conservatory in Boston, graduating in 2008. That same year, she founded Kammer Klang, a new music series at Café Oto, and later co-founded the London Contemporary Music Festival in 2013. These platforms have showcased a diverse range of composers, from established figures to emerging voices. Her curatorial work emphasises dismantling hierarchies in music, presenting canonical pieces alongside those of lesser-known composers. Her discography reflects her multifaceted artistry. Her debut solo album, Paradise 94 (2018), released on Modern Love, merges cello with archival recordings, creating a textured soundscape that traverses musique concrète, industrial noise, and euphoric synths. In 2023, she released Blue Veil, her first solo cello album, co-produced with Kali Malone and Stephen O'Malley. The album isolates the moment of bow on string, offering a visceral listening experience that emphasises the raw interaction between the cello and subtle electronic sine waves.
