Biography

British composer born in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, on August 27, 1959, Ian Boddy is influenced by contemporary electronic music, particularly the German school. Setting up his own studio in Newcastle, he benefited from the Arts Council's programme for artistic development and produced three experimental cassettes published by the Mirage label. Using synthesizers with analog circuitry and tape manipulation, he recorded several albums for the Surreal to Real label, including The Climb (1983), Spirits (1984), Phoenix (1986) and Odyssey (1989), the first to appear on CD, before signing with Something Else Records for the next four productions. In 1999, Ian Boddy set up his own label, DiN, under which his creations have been released ever since. He also collaborates on the ARC and Redshift projects alongside Mark Shreeve and with Andy Pickford, Ron Boots, Harold van der Heijden, Chris Carter, Robert Rich, Bernard Wöstheinrich, David Wright, Erik Wollo, Jane Molloy, Markus Reuter, Nigel Mullaney and dB (Dave Bessell). Still very active both in the studio and in concert, the composer released the albums Coil (2022), Modulations III (2023) and Modal Operandi (2024). In 2025, Ian Boddy collaborated with Harald Grosskopf on the album Doppelgänger and with Erik Wøllo on Transmissions.
