Robert Rich is an American composer and musician born on August 23, 1963 in Mountain View, California. A major figure in ambient music since the 1980s, he is credited with helping define the genres of ambient, dark ambient, tribal ambient and experimental trance. His musical style is characterized by the use of homemade acoustic and electronic instruments, microtones, digital sound processing, chaotic systems and feedback networks. In a discography of over 50 albums, Robert Rich has made his mark on the ambient scene. Notable works include Numena (1987), Rainforest (1989), Seven Veils (1998), Somnium (2001), Outpost with Ian Boddy (2002), Echo of Small Things (2005), Ylang (2010), Neurogenesis (2022) and Cloud Ornament, with Luca Formentini, in 2024.
