Biography
William James Basinski, born on 25 June 1958 in Houston, Texas is an American avant-garde composer. He began his musical journey as a classically trained clarinetist and studied jazz saxophone and composition at the University of North Texas in the late 1970s. Inspired by minimalists such as Steve Reich and Brian Eno, he started experimenting with tape loops and old reel-to-reel tape decks, developing his meditative style. His first release was Shortwavemusic, recorded in 1982 but released on vinyl in 1998. Following this, he self-released Watermusic in 2000 through his own label, 2062 Records. His breakthrough came with the four-volume album The Disintegration Loops (2002â2003), constructed from gradually decaying twenty-year-old tapes of his earlier music. Throughout his career, William Basinski collaborated with various artists, including Richard Chartier, Lawrence English, and Janek Schaefer. He also composed film scores such as Pursuit of Loneliness in 2012. He put out several releases on the Temporary Residence Limited label in the 2020s, including The Clocktower at the Beach (2023) and September 23rd (2024). In 2025, he collaborated again with Richard Chartier for Aurora Terminalis, released twelve years after Aurora Liminalis.
