Cryptic Slaughter is an American crossover thrash band from Santa Monica, California, formed in 1984 by Les Evans, Scott Peterson, and Adam Scott. The trio initially played covers before transitioning to original material. Their first demo, Life in Grave, released in 1985, gained traction through underground tape trading. Cryptic Slaughter's debut LP, Convicted, was released in July 1986 on Metal Blade Records, selling over 25,000 copies and establishing the band as a notable force in hardcore music. Their follow-up album, Money Talks (1987), further solidified their reputation with its political themes and fast-paced rhythms. The band's final studio album with the original lineup, Stream of Consciousness, was recorded in 1988 but released after their disbandment in July of that same year. After reforming with a new lineup, they released Speak Your Peace (1990). Cryptic Slaughter is often cited as a pioneer of crossover thrash alongside bands like D.R.I. and Stormtroopers of Death, and influenced acts like Napalm Death.
