Possessed is an American death metal band formed in 1982 in the San Francisco Bay Area. The original lineup consisted of guitarist Mike Torrao and drummer Mike Sus, who started a garage band with vocalist Barry Fisk and bassist Jeff Andrews. Following Fisk's suicide and the departure of Andrews in 1983, bassist and vocalist Jeff Becerra and guitarist Brian Montana joined the group. They recorded the demo Death Metal (1984), which caught the attention of Brian Slagel, who included the track âSwing of the Axeâ on the compilation Metal Massacre VI (1985). After Montana was replaced by guitarist Larry LaLonde, the group released their debut studio album, Seven Churches, in 1985 under Combat Records. They followed with the album Beyond the Gates, released on October 31, 1986, and the EP The Eyes of Horror (1987). Internal tensions led to their disbandment in 1987, though Torrao reformed the band with various lineups from 1990 to 1993. In 2007, Becerra reunited the group, leading to the release of their third studio album, Revelations of Oblivion, on May 10, 2019. The band toured internationally to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of their debut album and began working on a follow-up album under the working title Throne of Sorrow.
