Chikita Violenta is a Mexican indie rock band from Mexico City, formed in 2000 after members Luis Arce, Andrés Velasco, Esteban Suárez, and Armando David met in high school between 1994 and 1997. Influenced by college rock acts like Pavement and Sonic Youth, they self-produced their debut album, Chikita Violenta (2005). They collaborated with producer Dave Newfeld on The Stars and Suns Sessions (2007). This led to tours across Mexico City and the U.S., including performances at SXSW. The video for "Laydown" (2006) was highlighted by Spin Magazine in August 2008. They released their third album, TRE3S (2010), recorded over three trips to Canada with collaborations from Loel Campbell and Tony Nesbitt-Larking. They signed with Toronto label Arts & Crafts for album releases and were selected as an Editor's Choice by the New Haven Register.
