Michael Alec Anthony West, known professionally as Rebel MC and Congo Natty, was born on August 27, 1964, in Islington, London, England. He is a British jungle producer, spiritual chanter, and toaster who has also used various aliases such as Conquering Lion, Blackstar, and Tribe of Issachar. In the late 1980s, he formed the group Double Trouble with Michael Menson, Karl Brown, and Leigh Guest. This collaboration led to two hip-house records reaching the UK Top 40 in 1989: "Just Keep Rockin'" and "Street Tuff", which peaked at Number 3 on the UK Singles Chart. These tracks were included on his debut album Rebel Music. In 1991, he released his second album, Black Meaning Good, which blended hip-house and pop-rap influences with radical political and spiritual themes, featuring notable reggae and dancehall artists such as Barrington Levy and Dennis Brown. Notable singles from this album include "The Wickedest Sound" and "Tribal Base", which helped shape the early jungle sound. His third album, Word, Sound and Power, released in 1992, further explored breakbeat hardcore, house, conscious spiritual roots reggae, dubwise, and hip hop, with singles such as "Rich Ah Getting Richer" and "I Can't Get No Sleep". He is often credited with popularising the term 'jungle' through his work. In 1994, he converted to Rastafari and released several influential jungle tracks under various aliases, including "Code Red" as Conquering Lion.
