Biography

Alois Gromer, known professionally as Al Gromer Khan, and born on April 8, 1946, in Frauenzell, Germany, is a sitar player and composer whose music spanned genres including ambient, new age, world music, and electronica. During his internship years, Gromer formed a skiffle group and became a jazz guitarist before moving to London in 1966 where he participated in various creative experiments that influenced him deeply. A pivotal moment came when he attended a concert by Ustad Vilayat Khan at Westminster Abbey in 1968, leading him to dedicate his life to studying the sitar under Ustad Imrat Khan. Gromer's career took off with numerous albums and collaborations. He released his debut album Zubân in 1981, followed by notable works such as Divan I Khas (Visions of a Mogul Prince) in 1987 and Music From an Eastern Rosegarden in 1989. In 2015, Gromer Khan was awarded the Rabindranath Tagore Culture Prize.
