Biography

Constance Mary Demby, born on May 9, 1939, in Oakland, California, was an American musician, composer, painter, sculptor, and multimedia producer. She began classical piano lessons at age eight and later studied sculpture and painting at the University of Michigan. In 1960, Demby moved to Greenwich Village, New York City, where she combined her musical and sculptural disciplines, creating sheet metal sound sculptures that led to the development of experimental instruments like the sonic steel space bass and the whale sail. Her first album, Skies Above Skies, was released in 1980, followed by Sunborne (1980) and Sacred Space Music (1982). Demby's breakthrough came with her 1987 album Novus Magnificat: Through the Stargate (1987). Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, she released several albums including Ãterna (1995), Sanctum Sanctuorum (2001), and Sonic Immersion (2004). Demby passed away on March 20, 2021.
