Biography
Safam was an American Jewish rock band from Boston, Massachusetts, formed in 1974 by Dan Funk, Joel Sussman, Robbie Solomon, and Alan Nelson. Initially performing primarily traditional Hasidic and Israeli songs, the group transitioned to original music after discovering Solomon and Sussman's songwriting talents. Their early original album releases included Dreams of Safam (1976), followed by Encore (1978). Encore included "Leaving Mother Russia", a popular original song about Jewish refuseniks unable to leave the Soviet Union. The band performed extensively throughout the United States, England, the Caribbean, and Canada during the 1980s and 1990s. They released notable albums such as Bittersweet (1983) and After All These Years (1995). Safam's repertoire spanned various genres, including rock, pop, folk, Dixieland, calypso, Latin, Hasidic, and cantorial music. They have released eleven studio albums, two greatest hits albums, and a double album of Hannukkah and Passover songs.
