Anthony Peter Pateras is an Australian composer, pianist, and electronic musician who was born in 1979 in Melbourne. He received classical piano training and formed the band Elemenopede in 1996 before establishing a career focused on exploratory contemporary classical and electroacoustic music. Pateras is famous for a musical approach that synthesizes notation, improvisation, and electronics, often utilizing prepared piano and tape recorders. He released his debut solo studio album, Mutant Theatre, (2004) through John Zorn's Tzadik Records. His orchestral composition Chromatophore for 8 amplified strings was performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2006. Pateras has received three nominations at the APRA Music Awards for his works Refractions (2011), Flesh and Ghost (2012), and Beauty Will Be Amnesiac or Will not Be at All (2015). His extensive discography includes solo recordings such as Chasms (2007) and Chromatophore (2008). He has collaborated with numerous artists, including Mike Patton in the project tÄtÄma, which released the albums Geocidal (2014) and Necroscape (2020), and Robin Fox on the recordings Coagulate (2003) and Flux Compendium (2006). In 2014, he was recognized with a Sidney Myer Creative Fellowship.
