Biography

Alice Fitoussi was an Algerian singer born on May 9, 1916, in Bordj Bou Arréridj. She studied music with her father, violinist Rahmim Fitoussi, and released her debut recording at age 13. Fitoussi performed Andalusian classical music and the hawzii style. Her career featured performances for Jewish and Muslim audiences, for which she utilized all-female orchestras. She performed the recording “Medh”, a poetic song honoring the Prophet Mohammed, for Arab-Muslim audiences. Fitoussi remained in Algeria after the country achieved independence in 1962. She died in 1978 in El Biar. Posthumously, her recordings appeared in the 2006 collection Trésors de la Chanson Judéo-Arabe released by Mélodie Distribution.
