Biography

Jochen “Zeno” Roth was a German guitarist and songwriter born on June 30, 1956, in Düsseldorf. He was the younger brother of guitarist Uli Jon Roth. In the 1970s, he formed the band Black Angel with Ule W. Ritgen while attending university in Hanover. Roth established the ensemble Zeno in 1980 and released the eponymous studio recording Zeno in 1986. The group performed as an opening act for Queen on July 9, 1986. His discography included the studio recordings Zenology (1995), Listen to the Light (1998), Zenology II (2005), and Runway to the Gods (2006). In a 1998 Burrn! magazine poll, Listen to the Light was voted number 2 and the recording “Meet Me at the Rainbow” reached number 9. Roth was ranked as the number 2 guitarist and number 3 songwriter in the same poll. He died on February 5, 2018, following a period of illness.
