Biography
Python Lee Jackson, an Australian hard rock group formed in December 1965 in Sydney, consisted of Frank Kennington and Mick Lieber from the United Kingdom, along with David Montgomery on drums. The band's early lineup included Roy James on bass guitar and featured former members of other notable groups such as Jeff St John & the Id and the Denvermen. In March 1966, keyboard player Dave Bentley joined, followed by Malcolm McGee as vocalist in June. Their first single, "Emergency Ward", was released in September 1966, backed by a cover version of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love?". The group's second single, a cover of Major Lance's "Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um", followed in December. In late 1968, the band moved to the United Kingdom and recorded "In a Broken Dream" with Rod Stewart as guest vocalist in April 1969. The song was initially released in October 1970 but gained significant traction when re-released in August 1972, peaking at Number 3 on the UK Singles Chart and Number 56 on the United States Billboard Hot 100. Python Lee Jackson disbanded later that year. McGee, the band's early vocalist, passed away on May 17, 2012.
