The Make-Up was an American post-punk band from Washington, D.C. Formed in 1995, the group originally consisted of singer Ian Svenonius, guitarist and organist James Canty, drummer Steve Gamboa and bassist Michelle Mae. The ensemble combined garage rock and soul to create a genre they called Gospel Yeh-Yeh. In late 1999, the trio was joined by guitarist Alex Minoff. The band released their debut single âBlue is Beautifulâ in 1995 through their own label Black Gemini Records. Their debut full-length studio album Destination: Love - Live! At Cold Rice appeared in 1996. While marketed as a live release the record was actually recorded in a studio with live sounds added later. Their subsequent recordings included the albums Sound Verite (1997), In Mass Mind (1998) and Save Yourself (1999). In 1997 the group released the single âFree Arthur Leeâ to promote the release of the singer from jail. The Make-Up dissolved in early 2000, but reformed in 2012 to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival. Drummer Mark Cisneros subsequently joined the group. Their posthumous live album Untouchable Sound was issued in 2006.
