Biography

The Mooney Suzuki formed in New York City in 1996, originally composed of vocalist and guitarist Sammy James Jr., guitarist Graham Tyler, bassist John Paul Ribas, and drummer Will Rockwell‑Scott; the band’s name references the first two vocalists of the German group Can. Their early career began with the release of the singles "Taking Me Apart" and "Love Is Everywhere" in 1998, followed by an EP in 1999, and the debut album People Get Ready in 2000 on Estrus Records. In 2002, the group issued Electric Sweat, touring with the Strokes and the Hives and securing a deal with Columbia Records; the same year they appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and other television programs. The sophomore album Alive & Amplified was released in 2004, featuring the track "Alive and Amplified" which entered the UK Singles Chart at number 38 and was included in the Madden NFL 2005 video‑game soundtrack. After a brief hiatus, the band released Have Mercy in 2007 on Elixia Records, contributing tracks to film soundtracks such as Tropic Thunder.
