Biography
Shelter, formed in Newâ¯York City in 1990, was founded by Rayâ¯Cappo, a former Youth of Today vocalist born in 1991 who later pursued Krishnaâtheology; he served as lead singer and lyricist. The groupâs breakthrough came with the debut single "Noâ¯Compromise" (Equal Vision Records) and the first fullâlength Perfectionâ¯ofâ¯Desire (Revelation Records), recorded with producer Donâ¯Fury and released on 14â¯Julyâ¯1990, establishing a hardcoreâpioneering sound. Chronologically, the band issued Questâ¯forâ¯Certainty (Equal Vision Records, 1992), Attainingâ¯theâ¯Supreme (Equal Vision Records, 1993), and Mantra (Roadrunner Records, 1995), the latter featuring a mix of hardcore and popâpunk tracks such as "Hereâ¯Weâ¯Goâ¯Again", which received MTV airplay. In 1997 Beyondâ¯Planetâ¯Earth introduced ska and industrial elements; a 2000 selfâfinanced release, Whenâ¯20â¯Summersâ¯Pass, was later reissued by Victory Records and Centuryâ¯Media. After a brief hiatus in 2001, the band reunited for the 2006 album Eternal (Goodâ¯Lifeâ¯Recordings), compiling previously unreleased material. Shelterâs discography, spanning five studio albums and several EPs, reflects a consistent presence in the U.S. alternativeârock and hardcore scenes, with notable touring alongside acts such as Theâ¯Mightyâ¯Mightyâ¯Bosstones and Greenâ¯Day.
