Biography

Shelter, formed in New York City in 1990, was founded by Ray Cappo, a former Youth of Today vocalist born in 1991 who later pursued Krishna‑theology; he served as lead singer and lyricist. The group’s breakthrough came with the debut single "No Compromise" (Equal Vision Records) and the first full‑length Perfection of Desire (Revelation Records), recorded with producer Don Fury and released on 14 July 1990, establishing a hardcore‑pioneering sound. Chronologically, the band issued Quest for Certainty (Equal Vision Records, 1992), Attaining the Supreme (Equal Vision Records, 1993), and Mantra (Roadrunner Records, 1995), the latter featuring a mix of hardcore and pop‑punk tracks such as "Here We Go Again", which received MTV airplay. In 1997 Beyond Planet Earth introduced ska and industrial elements; a 2000 self‑financed release, When 20 Summers Pass, was later reissued by Victory Records and Century Media. After a brief hiatus in 2001, the band reunited for the 2006 album Eternal (Good Life Recordings), compiling previously unreleased material. Shelter’s discography, spanning five studio albums and several EPs, reflects a consistent presence in the U.S. alternative‑rock and hardcore scenes, with notable touring alongside acts such as The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Green Day.
