Beefeater was an American post-hardcore band formed in Washington, D.C. in 1984, consisting of Tomas Squip on vocals and percussion, Fred "Freak" Smith on guitar, Doug Birdzell on bass, and Bruce Taylor on drums. The group quickly became a key player in the local hardcore scene, releasing their debut LP Plays for Lovers through Dischord Records in 1985. This album was followed by the six-track EP "Need a Job" in 1986. The band disbanded in 1986, and their second full-length, House Burning Down, was released in 1987 as their farewell album. The band's music blended elements of funk, R&B, jazz, and rock with influences from metal, reggae, and hip hop. In 2017, Fred "Freak" Smith passed away under mysterious circumstances.
