Biography

The Conscious Daughters are an American hip hop duo from Oakland, California, consisting of members Carla "CMG" Green and Karryl "Special One" Smith. Formed in 1992, the group became known for their energetic performances and socially conscious lyrics, paving the way for future female artists in what was considered to be a male-dominated genre. Their debut album, Ear to the Street, released in 1993 on Scarface Records, received critical acclaim for its raw energy and powerful messages addressing issues such as violence, racism, and sexism. Notable tracks like "Somethin' to Ride To (Fonky Expedition)" and "We Roll Deep" gained the duo considerable recognition and they signed with EMI Records to release Gamers in 1996. Over the years they collaborated on myriad projects, appearing on Rap City, MTV Jams, and Soul Train, returning in 2009 with The Nutcracker Suite. Tragically, Smith passed away in December 2011, marking a significant loss for the hip-hop community and their fans.
