Biography

From a young age, Sunni Colón had a deep fascination with the sounds and melodies that surrounded him. Born in Los Angeles to Nigerian parents, he had a multicultural upbringing, living in New York, London, France, and Africa, and as self-taught multi-instrumentalist, Sunni Colón began producing music at an early age, initially crafting hip-hop beats for fellow rappers. His educational background in civil engineering from California State University, Long Beach, also played a role in shaping his creative process. In 2013, after quitting his job as a project manager at a design and construction company and living out of his car in Los Angeles, he had been spending most his time uploading his tracks to music platforms when his guitar-infused slow jam "Temple," was discovered by Hollywood music supervisor Paul Stewart, and featured in the 2014 film Dear White People. Following this with debut album, Thierry Disko in 2016, featuring a blend of psychedelic rock, funk, and soul-inflected tracks, his success continued with chart-topping singles like "Mornin Dew," which garnered nearly nine million listeners, seeing the title track "Satin Psicodelic," from 2018 sophomore album, following suit. Hailed as Los Angeles' best-kept secret, Colón’s velvety vocal style earned comparisons to Frank Ocean by The New York Times, evident on singles such as "Yours Truly, 2095" (2018), "Summer Blu" (2018), "Supernova" (2019), "Slip n Slide" (2020) and "Provide" (2021). 2022 album, JuJu & The Flowerbug followed shortly after - an album, Colón claims that was born from a free-flowing, infinite stream of consciousness, allowing him to explore unconfined creativity and connect with human emotions. Later in the year, Sunni Colón collaborated with French DJ duo Braxe + Falcon on “Elevation” which was remixed by British producer Paul Woolford and released in April, 2023.
