Dirk Serries (b. 1968, Antwerp, Belgium) is a Belgian guitarist, composer and sound artist whose career spans more than four decades. He is a well-known figure on the European experimental scene, known for his sonic explorations at the crossroads of ambient, drone, avant-garde, industrial and free improvisation. He began his musical career in the mid-1980s under the pseudonym vidnaObmana (meaning optical illusion in Serbian), with which he released numerous albums of ambient and minimal music between 1984 and 2007. This project brought him international recognition in ambient and experimental circles. After ending the vidnaObmana alias, he pursued other sound projects, notably under the name Fear Falls Burning and for the Microphonics series, while collaborating with artists such as Steven Wilson, Justin K. Broadrick, Steve Roach and other avant-garde and experimental rock figures. Since the 2010s, Dirk Serries has released a series of albums under his own name, including Stream of Consciousness for Projekt Records, Zonal Disturbances and Solo Acoustic Guitar Improvisations on his contemporary label A New Wave of Jazz. His music relies heavily on the electric guitar, enhanced by effects pedals, to create immersive, meditative or abstract soundscapes, often constructed in real time. His other albums include The Origin Reversal (2014), Frontier (2020), At Future Dawn (2024), Defiance of Self (2024) and Infinite and Unbound (2026).
