Biography

Shin Daechul (born February 16, 1967, in Seoul, South Korea) is a prominent South Korean guitarist, songwriter, and bandleader, best known as the leader of the pioneering heavy metal band Sinawe. The son of legendary rock musician Shin Jung-hyeon, often dubbed the "Godfather of Korean rock," Daechul began learning guitar in elementary school under his father's mentorship. He formed Sinawe in 1985, and their 1986 debut album marked a milestone in Korean rock, selling over 400,000 copies and cementing their place as trailblazers of the local heavy metal scene. Over the decades, Sinawe became a breeding ground for many influential musicians, including Seo Taiji and Yim Jae-beom. Daechul also participated in notable collaborations, such as the rock project D.O.A. alongside Kim Tae Won and Kim Do Kyun, and contributed to Seo Taiji and Boys’ debut album in 1992. In the 2010s, he expanded his influence as a judge on Top Band and took a strong public stance on artist rights and medical justice—particularly in the case of his late friend Shin Hae-chul. Through his Barun Music Cooperative and various blues rock releases like "Melancholy Man Blues" (2021), "Love Tone" (2021), and "April" (2025).
