Biography

Rainy Sun is a South Korean rock band formed in 1993 in Busan. Known for their distinctive sound, they earned the nickname “Ghost Metal” in the 1990s, making a significant impact on the indie music scene. Their music blends haunting, atmospheric compositions with Jung Cha-sik's unique vocal style, which shifts from mournful falsetto to explosive shouts. The band’s debut album, Porno Virus (1998), showcased their intense metal sound, characterized by powerful melodies and evocative lyrics written by the members themselves. A reissue included bonus tracks like remakes of Blue System's "Under My Skin" and Jo Deok-bae's "Dream." Their second album, 유감(Regret) (2000), marked a shift, incorporating more Korean lyrics and a modern rock/pop influence, with highlights like "Ocean II," featured in the film Birds Fly Backwards, and the Russian-language track "Palobina." Their third album, WOMAN (2003), explored quieter, melancholic tones closer to modern rock and trip-hop, with jazz drummer Chris Varga joining the lineup. The fourth album, Origin (2009), returned to their darker, intense metal roots, while showcasing broader musical diversity with tracks like "Water" and "Ash." Rainy Sun’s core members, vocalist Jung Cha-sik and guitarist Kim Tae-jin, have remained constants since their first album, joined by bassist Choi Tae-seop and drummer Kim Dae-hyun.
