Alan Wilder, born in the United Kingdom, is an electronic composer best known for the project Recoil. Wilder began creating experimental music while a member of Depeche Mode, recording 4âtrack demos that diverged from the groupâs pop style. In 1986, his work was released under the name Recoil as the album 1â¯+â¯2, marking his first official release. The project continued with Hydrology in 1988, followed by Bloodline in 1992, which included the single "Faith Healer" featuring Douglas McCarthy. After Wilder departed Depeche Mode in 1995, Recoil gained prominence with Unsound Methods (1997) and Liquid (2000). The 2007 album subHuman introduced guest vocalists Carla Trevaskis and Joe Richardson and spawned the single "Prey". In 2010, Wilder compiled earlier works into Selected, accompanied by a touring cycle that saw the first live performances of Recoil. The project has remained active, with releases such as Recoil: Selected (2010) and continued digital availability of earlier titles. Recoilâs work has been recognized within the electronic music community, receiving accolades such as IGNâs âBest Electronic Albumâ award for subHuman in 2007.
