Biography

Mercury Prize-nominated singer and songwriter Nadine Shah was born in Whitburn, South Tyneside on 16 January 1986 to parents with Norwegian, English and Pakistani heritage. She released her debut Ben Hillier-produced LP Love Your Dum and Mad in 2013, baring her emotions on a record inspired by the suicides of two close friends. For her third album Holiday Destination, released in 2017 and produced again by Ben Hillier—the drummer in her live band—she received the prestigious Mercury Music Prize nomination in 2018 but lost out to Wolf Alice's 2017's Visions of a Life album. She drew critical acclaim once again for her fourth album Kitchen Sink, which was released in 2020 on Infectious and dealt with sexism, loss, and terminal illness. She joined EMI North for her fifth album Filthy Underneath, which arrived in February 2024. The album was inspired by the death of her mother from cancer in August 2020 and Nadine Shah's own subsequent experience of addiction, PTSD and attempted suicide, having written the LP while staying at a rehab facility.
