Biography

Camae Ayewa, better known as Moor Mother, is a musician, producer, performer and poet born in Aberdeen, Maryland, on November 19, 1981. She studied photography at the Philadelphia Art Institute, before devoting herself to music. Also known as Moor Mother Goddess or Camae Defstar, her albums are an inventive blend of poetry, rap, jazz and electronica. After a homonymous debut recording released in 2015, Manufacture of Indigo (the same year) and Fetish Bones (2016) followed, which really launched her career thanks to praise from the music press. In addition to her solo activity, Moor Mother sings with the avant-garde jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements, with whom she regularly records. She continues her personal journey into experimentation with The Motionless Present (2017), Analog Fluids of Sonic Black Holes (2019), True Opera released as Moor Jewelry (2020), Clepsydra (2020), Brass in collaboration with Billy Woods (2020), Black Encyclopedia of the Air (2021), Jazz Codes (2022) and The Great Bailout (2024). In 2022, she produced the album Care Mix as a DJ, before collaborating twice with atmospheric sludge metal band Sumac, for the double mix of 100425 and the album The Film, both released in 2025.
