Monotrona, a one-woman musical/performance group, was founded by Jodie Baltazar, also known as Jodie Mechanic, in 1996 after moving to Portland, Oregon. The group was active until 2003 and featured Baltazar performing in costume as various self-styled Superbeings or Fourteen Impersonations of Man. Monotrona's early performances utilized drums, metal percussion, and homemade electronics, including a sine-wave generator and square-wave generator. In 1998, Baltazar released her debut album Ooka Meets Jing Pow Ki Poo and moved to New York City, where she began incorporating video game samples into her music. Her album Hawkeye & Firebird (2002) marked a shift towards using SID samples from early video games. Monotrona's final performance took place on February 14, 2003, when Baltazar was eight months pregnant.
