Biography
A reggaeton artist whose chart-topping music makes room for hip-hop, merengue, and Latin pop influences, Magic Juan was born in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, New York, on August 5, 1971. He joined his elementary school's choir at 10 years old and began rapping as a teenager. A musical prodigy, he briefly studied at New York Institute of Technology before dropping out of school to join the merengue band Proyecto Uno. Released in 1991, the song "Brinca" featured Magic Juan's bilingual rapping and became an international hit, charting at Number 1 in multiple countries in Latin America. Hailed as a pioneering band in the Urban Latino movement, Proyecto Uno went on to sell more than five million albums, thanks to hits like "El Grillero," "Latinos," and "El Tiburón." Despite the group's success, Magic Juan left the lineup during the early 2000s and launched his solo career. His debut album, La Prueba, was released in 2003, followed by a trio of well-received records â El Duro, Libertad: The Magic Juan Street Mix Jump Off, and the double-album Inevitable â in 2004. Following 2007's Quiscalle, he broadened his sound even further with 2009's The Sure Bet, whose songs mixed Magic Juan's hip-hop and merengue roots with tropical influences like bachata, salsa, and reggae. By the end of the following decade, he had earned more than 30 Number 1 hits in various countries, making him one of the biggest names in Latin music. He continued building upon that legacy with songs like 2021's "Pásame la Botella," an updated version of Mach & Daddyâs 2005 chart-topper "La Botella."
