Biography

The Mackenzies were a Scottish indie rock band from Glasgow that formed in 1986. The ensemble was a quartet consisting of vocalist Gary Weir, guitarist Iain Beveridge, bassist Peter Gilmour, and drummer Paul Turnbull. Their musical style blended funk and punk influences with an exacerbated vocal style. They released the single “New Breed” (1986), which reached number 15 on the United Kingdom indie charts. They followed this with the EP A Sensual Assault (1987), which reached number 22 on the same chart. The group is recognized for the track “Big Jim (There's No Pub in Heaven)” (1986), which was included on the influential C86 compilation released by NME. During their career, they recorded two radio sessions for the BBC program hosted by John Peel. The Mackenzies disbanded in 1987, after which members Paul Turnbull and Graham Lironi joined the band The Secret Goldfish.
