L.A. Guns were formed in Los Angeles in 1983 by guitarist Tracii Guns, with singer Michael Jagosz, bassist Ole Beich, and drummer Rob Gardner in the bandâs early lineup. After Jagosz left, Axl Rose briefly joined as lead singer, and the groupâs overlap with Hollywood Rose eventually helped spark the formation of Guns Nâ Roses. L.A. Guns re-formed in 1985 with a new lineup and built an audience with a raw hard-rock style rooted in the Sunset Strip scene. Their self-titled debut album arrived in 1988, followed by Cocked & Loaded (1989), which became their commercial breakthrough and produced the bandâs best-known ballad, âThe Ballad of Jayne.â After Hollywood Vampires (1991), disappointing sales for Vicious Circle (1994) led to further instability, while members moved through side projects including Contraband. Over the following years, L.A. Guns became known as much for lineup changes as for their catalog, and the name was eventually used by two competing versions of the band. The dispute was resolved after Tracii Guns and longtime vocalist Phil Lewis reunited, leading to The Missing Peace (2017), their first new studio album together in years. They followed with The Devil You Know (2019), then settled the name dispute with former drummer Steve Riley in 2021, allowing Rileyâs version to continue as Rileyâs L.A. Guns until his death in 2023. Guns and Lewis kept the main band active with Checkered Past (2021), Black Diamonds (2023), and Leopard Skin (2025), released through Cleopatra Records and previewed by âTaste Itâ and âLucky Motherfucker.â In 2026, L.A. Guns continued touring behind Leopard Skin on the Lucky MFâr World Tour and prepared the live album Live from The Guild Theatre, recorded during the previous yearâs tour and scheduled for release through Cleopatra Records.
