Biography

Formed in Miami, Florida, in 1988, the American rock band Saigon Kick is best known for its 1992 hit "Love Is on the Way". Led by singer and guitarist Jason Bieler, the band, completed by Matt Kramer (vocals), Tom DeFile (bass) and Phil Varone (drums), blended hard rock, alternative rock and heavy metal, without limiting themselves to any one trend at a time when grunge was proliferating. After a debut album of the same name released on the Third Stone/Atlantic label in 1991, the band reached its peak with the follow-up The Lizard (1992), featuring the famous power ballad "Love Is on the Way", which reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and went gold. After Kramer's departure, Saigon Kick continued as a trio with a new bassist, Chris McLernon, for the album Water (1993), produced like the previous one by leader-turned-singer Jason Bieler. Success, still on the agenda, eluded the following recordings Devil in the Details (1995), Moments from the Fringe (1998) and Bastards (1999), before they split up in 2000. In 2012, Saigon Kick made a comeback, as did Kramer, who joined his compatriots Bieler, Varone and McLernon for a series of concerts, in the absence of a new album. Guitarist Steve Gibb, who joined in 2017, switches to bass as part of the trio still comprising Bieler and Varone in 2023.
