Biography

Freestyle, a Filipino pop and R&B band, was formed in 1996 in Davao City, Philippines, by former guitarist Richard Felix “Tat” Suzara. The original lineup featured vocalists Jinky Vidal and Top Suzara, who served as the band’s primary songwriter. The group achieved mainstream success in 1998 with singles such as "Before I Let You Go" and "So Slow", which helped establish their presence on local charts. In 1999 and 2000, Freestyle released the compilations Closer to Home and Closer to Home 2 under Viva Records, followed by the studio album Freestyle in 1990 (digital release). The band continued to produce hits, including "This Time" (2000) and "Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang?", a collaboration with Pops Fernandez. Freestyle toured extensively across the Philippines and released live recordings such as Freestyle Live (2000) and Live @ 19 East (2006). After a period of lineup changes, Top Suzara departed in 2005 and returned in 2022, reclaiming the Freestyle brand and trademarking the name. The group’s final studio effort, Don't Stop The Rock: The Greatest Hits (2010), compiled their most popular tracks and marked the culmination of their commercial output. The band’s legacy remained in the Filipino music scene, with continued recognition through digital reissues and retrospective compilations.
