Hear'n Aid was a charitable musical project formed in 1985 in the United Kingdom, assembled by musicians Jimmy Bain of Rainbow and Dio and Vivian Campbell of Dio, Whitesnake and Defâ¯Leppard, who sought to mobilise the heavyâmetal community for famine relief in Africa. The groupâs breakthrough came with the release of the single "Stars" in 1986, a collaboration that united vocalists such as Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford, Geoff Tate, and Paul Shortino, among others. The same year the charity album Hear 'n Aid (An AllâStar Album For Famine Relief) was issued, featuring the title track "Stars" alongside live recordings from Kiss, Accept, Scorpions, Motörhead, and Rush, and an unreleased Jimi Hendrix piece titled "Can You See Me". The project attracted a wide array of contributors, including members of Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe, Queensrÿche, Blueâ¯Ãysterâ¯Cult, and a cameo by the fictional band Spinal Tap. Although Hear'n Aid did not pursue further releases or touring after the 1986 album, the single "Stars" achieved significant chart presence in the United Kingdom and the United States, and the album remains a notable example of musicâindustry philanthropy, with its proceeds directed to United Nations initiatives for famine relief.
