Biography

Genaside II was formed in 1989 in Brixton, London, by Kris Bonez and Chilly Phatz. The duo entered the scene with early releases such as "The Alchemist / Death of the Kamikazee" and "The Motiv" in 1990, before achieving a breakthrough with the 1991 single "Narra Mine", which combined soulful female vocals, raw MCing, and hard‑noise drum samples and became a staple in the hardcore and early jungle scenes. In 1995 the pair reunited and signed to Internal, leading to the 1996 EP Waistline Firecracker and the studio album New Life 4 Tha Hunted, featuring guest appearances from the New Power Generation, Eek‑A‑Mouse, Rose Windross, and Wu‑Tang Clan affiliate Cappadonna. They followed with the 1999 album Ad Finité, incorporating orchestral and breakbeat elements and a guest spot by Tricky. Genaside II toured extensively, supporting The Prodigy in 1997 and performing at the 1997 Red Square festival in Moscow. The group disbanded in 2002, leaving a legacy that influenced later artists such as M.I.A. and earned retrospective recognition within the UK electronic and breakbeat communities.
