Biography

Failure was an American alternative rock band from Los Angeles, formed in 1990. The group initially consisted of Ken Andrews, Greg Edwards, and Robert Gauss, with Kellii Scott joining later in 1993 to replace Gauss. In 1992, Failure signed with Slash Records and released their debut album Comfort. Dissatisfied with the raw sound of Comfort, the band took on production duties for their second album, Magnified, which was released in 1994. The following year, they began recording what would become Fantastic Planet (released in 1996). Despite label issues and a temporary disbandment of Slash Records' distribution deal with Warner Bros., Fantastic Planet featured the alternative-radio hit “Stuck on You”, which peaked at number 31 on the U.S. Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. Failure disbanded in 1997, citing personal differences. The split did not hold: after the retrospective Golden in 2004, Failure reunited in 2014 with Ken Andrews, Greg Edwards, and Kellii Scott for a sold-out Los Angeles comeback show, dates with Tool, and the EP Tree of Stars, which included “Come Crashing,” their first new studio song since Fantastic Planet. They returned in full in 2015 with The Heart Is a Monster, their first studio album in 19 years, then revisited their best-known 1990s work on the live release Fantastic Planet Live in 2017. In 2018 they issued a four-part EP series later collected as In the Future Your Body Will Be the Furthest Thing from Your Mind, followed by “Enjoy the Silence 2020” and the studio album Wild Type Droid in 2021, led by “Headstand” and “Submarines.” Their next phase included the 2023 live album and concert film We Are Hallucinations, while 2025 brought the documentary Every Time You Lose Your Mind: A Film About Failure. In 2026, Failure opened another studio chapter with Location Lost, preceded by “The Air’s on Fire,” “A Way Down,” and “The Rising Skyline,” the last featuring Hayley Williams, alongside a new U.S. tour.
