Poi Dog Pondering, an American band founded in Hawaii in 1984 by Frank Orrall as a solo project, initially performed their first concert at the Honolulu Academy of Arts in 1986. The group embarked on a year-long street performance tour across North America before settling in Austin, Texas in 1988. In Austin, they released two EPs and two full-length albums for Columbia Records, including Poi Dog Pondering (1989) and Wishing Like a Mountain and Thinking Like the Sea (1990). The band relocated to Chicago in 1992, incorporating orchestral arrangements and electronic music into their acoustic rock style. Notable albums from this period include Volo Volo (1992), Pomegranate (1995), and Natural Thing (1999). The band's membership evolved significantly over the years, with Frank Orrall remaining the sole constant member. In 1997, they were named best band by Chicago magazine.
