Detroit Grand Pubahs was formed in Detroit, Michigan, by Paris the Black Fu (real name Mack Goudy Jr., born 1970) and The Mysterious Mr O (real name Oliver Way, born 1972), both of whom began performing in local clubs during the late 1990s. Their breakthrough came with the 2000 single "Sandwiches", released on Throw Records and later reissued by Jive Electro, which peaked at number 29 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. In 2001 the duo issued their debut studio album Funk All Y'all through IntuitâSolar, followed by the 2004 release Galactic Ass Creatures from Uranus on Poker Flat Recordings, the same year Dr. Toefinger (Andy Toth) departed and Mr O joined as drummer. The group established its own label, Detelefunk, in 2006, under which they released the 2008 album Nuttin' Butt Funk and the 2010 album Madd Circus. Throughout the 2000s they toured extensively across the United States and Europe, performed at major festivals, and collaborated with other Detroit electronic acts. In 2002 the Detroit Music Awards nominated them for Outstanding Funk Artist/Group. Although no further releases have been issued since 2010, the Detroit Grand Pubahs remain a notable example of Detroitâs experimental electronic scene, with their early singles continuing to circulate on underground dance compilations.
