Biography

Destroy All Monsters was an American rock band formed in 1973 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The group initially consisted of University of Michigan art students Mike Kelley, Jim Shaw, Niagara, and filmmaker Cary Loren. Their early performances were experimental and abrasive, blending elements of punk rock, psychedelic rock, heavy metal, and noise rock with performance art. In 1976, Kelley and Shaw left to pursue graduate studies at CalArts in Los Angeles. The band continued with new members including Ron Asheton from The Stooges and Michael Davis from MC5, gaining significant attention with the release of their single Bored / You're Gonna Die (1978). Destroy All Monsters toured nationally between 1982 and 1984, becoming a notable fixture in the punk rock scene. They disbanded in 1985 but reunited sporadically for performances and releases, including a three-CD boxed set titled Destroy All Monsters: 1974–1976 compiled by Mike Kelley, Cary Loren, Byron Coley, and Thurston Moore in 1994.
